This is one of my favorite covers of all time. I was mentioned to a "friend" today that the best pop songs of all time are generally thinly veiled songs about sex. (I mean, c'mon. When Anita Ward asks for you to "ring her bell," I think we all know what she means!)

The original song from Olivia Newton John is a great pop classic, we can all agree there. Thankfully The Black Ghost have come to revive the old classic. The Black Ghosts (Myspace) are favorites of mine mainly because they are continuing a great tradition in their own brand of electronic dance music: Writing dance music about sex. So it's a perfect match for them to redo this gem. Have a listen a sing this with your favorite "buddy."

I found this great new site called PSDTUTS the other night. Most Photoshop tutorial sites are bloating with cheesy effects or dated visual tricks. This is the first time in a long time I've found a Photoshop tutorial site that actually has re-sparked my fire to get back to doing design work. They even have other affiliate sites for Illustrator, music (which looks great so far!) and they just started an After Effects tutorial site.

I am definitely going to be glued to these guys for the next few months!

So today was the first time I've ever had a real operation!

I've been suffering from a inguinal hernia for some time and finally had time to get it taken care of. Oddly enough, mine didn't result in any pain and little to no real discomfort. However, after having it checked, the doctor and I decided it would be best to treat it before it became a real issue. Basically the procedure involves cutting me open, placing a synthetic patch over my abdominal wall and then closing me up. Nothing major at all.

The entire hospital visit itself was brief. After I finally put on my hospital gown (complete with awesome socks) I couldn't help but replay the scene in It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia where Frank has a hospital gown on and is spinning around saying, "It really let's your ass breathe." Right after the nurse locked up all my stuff and put a security tie on the locker, I realized I still had my underwear on. I felt bad that she had the cut the tie and use another but I said to her, "Sorry, I just noticed that I was a lot warmer than I should be." After I removed them I said, "Yup, now I can feel the difference in temperature!"

I was the first operation of the day so most of the nurses were either walking around waiting for the doctor to get there. Every so often one would come in and chat with me. Two of them were FIlipino so we talked about the Manny Pacquiao fight. I told one of them an incident that happened a few days ago where a drunken British guy came up to me at a bar and asked me if I was Filipino. I replied "yes" enthusiastically and started shouting about Manny Pacquiao. He said I looked like him and as far as I can remember, we shouted some more and shared a man hug. As I told the nurse the story she was in the process of leaving my room but then walked back in to see if I did look like Pacquiao. She exclaimed, "oh you don't look like him!" and left the room.

Once I was all prepped and ready to go they started wheeling me into the operating room. It reminded me of all those scenes in movies where someone is being rushed down a hall way in critical condition. Nurses surround the patient and they are asking all sorts of medical questions about the patients condition. People are throwing themselves against walls to make room and there's generally some exciting music playing. I also imagined the scene from the victim's perspective. He or she is looking around dazed at faces yelling at each other and asking the person questions.

"What's your name?"
"What happened to you?"
"Do you have insurance?!"

It was a lot calmer and ginger than that.

Once I was finally in the OR they placed me under those giant saucers with tons of lamps on them that reminded me of the Adobe Light Field Camera that I previously blogged about. They asked me if I was feeling drowsy and honestly I was wide awake. The anesthesiologist told me minutes earlier that she was putting something in my IV to prep me for the anesthesia. I remember being in the OR for about 20 seconds and then I woke up back in my room. I think she tricked me and had me on the anesthesia way before I even made it in the OR! That trickster. I was upset that they didn't put a thing over my mouth so I could say something clever like "Oh let's light this mother... Ooh. I'm getting sleeeeeeeeepy."

As I woke up I laid in bed, had some water and was on my way in about less than an hour. The operation of course required that they shave half of my crotch and the incision is being held together with medical staples. When I get to remove the dressing tomorrow, I can only imagine that my crotch will look something similar to Two Face from The Dark Knight. Thankfully due to medical advances I won't be out of commission for two long, although I have no idea when I can finally move around well. I'm currently doing "the old man shuffle" everywhere I walk. I feel like I may have misunderestimated how long I was going to be out. Makes me wish I brought my Xbox 360 to my mother's house so I can beat Fallout 3.

In a coincidental twist, I should be all healed by the time New Years hits so I can lump in my surgery and newly fixed body into whatever ill conceived New Year's Resolution I make. Speaking of which, resolutions are a subject I am going to touch on in a future post. For now, I am going to old man shuffle into the kitchen, get some soda and finally beat Phoenix Wright on my DS.

My pal Ryan aka DJ Robbie Loggia (Mr. Loggia would be the gentleman in this clip that's NOT Tom Hanks.) is having his first big party tomorrow at Royal Oak in Williamsburg.

The party promises to be a big smash filled with music untypical of most of the 'Burg's parties (classic hip hop and funk spun together with electro and house bangers.). Royal Oak is a great venue located right next to McCarren Park. The place has a large lounge and bar area, a huge dance floor with plenty of lounge seating and a small room with a foosball table separating the two. What's not to love?!

Being half Asian, I may not be one to talk about how people drive. However, if I have to complain about how people drive on the daily, clearly there are worse drivers out there other than myself.

Whether it's the brood of morons packed into a mini van or even weirder, a larger family in a 2 door car that seem to drive more carelessly proportionate to the amount of family members that are in the car or maybe the white kids, not the Asian kids that drive in poorly "riced out" cars and park outside Burger Kings or other places with large parking lots or maybe the young girls on cellphones driving huge ass SUVs that men three times their size probably don't drive or maybe it's the skinny punk kids with his dad's 20 year old BMW that drive like they own the road simply because "it's a BMW" or the tons of morons who do simply illegal things while driving that really fucking irk me.

I don't know why but things like blocking intersections, not signaling when you're making a right turn in the suburbs, not signaling when you decide to cut me off on the highway, parking in handicap spaces when you're not handicapped, double parking in the middle of a one way street, parking outside the lines or taking up two spaces, driving slow in the left lane or just driving below speed limit anywhere is something I cannot wait to never have to deal with.

I feel like a massive weight and nuisance will be lifted off my shoulders living in a major city. Even though most of the world considers driving a privilege, most of us know that financially, emotionally and environmentally, it's a pain in the ass, especially for New Jersey drivers. Car insurance alone is such a kick in the wallet that I can't imagine how fun it will be to save that much extra money a month. My car insurance alone will equal 1/3 of my rent in Brooklyn. And without having to pay ridiculous gas prices, that's roughly 2/3 of my rent right there saved. Of course the health benefits of walking and biking everywhere will be great too. It'll definitely help hold back the eventual beer belly I'll further gain by using that extra money a month on stocking my fridge with tons and tons of booze.

Oh luck, you crazy jerk!

So today I decided to take out this bike I've found about a year ago. I mean look at this thing, why WASN'T I tearing up the suburbs with this guy?! Today I went out, got some great ankle socks, got a bike pump and popped on my best headband and shorts.

About less than a block away, the bike tire's tube popped OUT of the tire and wrapped around the spokes. It's really sad that the majority of sweating I did today was walking the bike back home in shame.

Yup.

I was one of the few nerds lucky enough to get their iPhone 3G on day one. (And it only took me an hour to get it activated in store! So I was up and running playing stupid YouTube clips in the store and pissing off other customers at 9:30am EST!)

I'm still getting used to the keyboard (and wondering how the hell I am ever going to text with this thing when I am drunk!) and I'll be posting a review of the experience so far in about a week. I'm still in the process of testing out all the apps (mostly the free ones) and seeing how they affect my life. I've had big plans of how the iPhone can change my life so I'm curious to see how having an iPhone for a week and using it's functionality to the fullest will be come 7 days of usage.

It's very rare that a band comes out of nowhere and kicks my ass. It's a very welcome sensation and The Ghost Frequency (Myspace) will do it with a smile and then invite you over to watch a zombie movie. Speaking of which, give the fellows an add on Myspace. They make the general band posts and every so often they even post a favorite monster movie clip. Oh, and they also make music fusing a great mix of dance rock elements, synths and flesh eating.

Enon (Myspace) has to be one of my favorite bands ever. They have that sort of fun indie rock attitude that would make you want to beg them to play all your house parties. Also, I've never been more infatuated with just a woman's voice before but then I heard Toko Yasuda. Can you marry someone's voice? I wonder. (Their male singer John Schmersal is also very awesome!)

Adobe (the guys you steal Photoshop from) are now venturing into something you can't download. Their multilense camera enables users to have "the sharphest shooting camera ever." The multiple lenses focus on EVERYTHING all at once allowing the user to adjust their focus in post production, rather than prior to their shot. More here.

Johnny Lee (website) is a young tech student with some brilliant ideas. When he's not making giant paint balloon slingshots or low cost brain-computer interaction software, he's playing with his Wii. Johnny reversed the intended purpose of the Wiimote to figure out how to make a low cost head tracking VR display for less money than that new t-shirt from Urban Outfitters.

And while Johnny's Tony Stark genius may impress young fellows like you and I, he was asked to show off some of his new hacks and ideas at TED 2008 Conference (what's TED you ask?) Watch as Johnny blows the minds of the attendees of this year's conference (most of whom are probably twice his age.)

God bless people who use their brains for good. Let's just hope Johnny never moves over to the side of evil!

After my post about the video for Stress by Justice, I did a little more browsing on Youtube for any other great videos for Justice. Me being the fiend for finding samples, I stumbled across some great ones.

He was on Netflix looking for some old horror movies to rent and he came across the video preview for an old Dario Argento movie called "Tenebre." He immediately heard the reference and he had to add it to his queue!

This is one I came across on Youtube and it's great. I absolutely love funk songs that sound like this. This reminds me of another amazing funk sampled in an french electro track...

It's crazy to know that one of my favorite Mr. Oizo (Myspace) tracks is less of a remix or sample of an old school disco track, but more of a retooling of it. The sample comes from Gary's Gang, a band that was famous around the time of American Bandstand. How many people in their early 20s actually know what that is?

I'm quite glad that Justice made this video the way they did. While all the bubblegum teeny boppers got their kicks enjoying the fun time dance party that was "D.A.N.C.E." Justice decided to reinform the general public that their music is not for you. They are not your friends. They don't want to be on your top 10 video programs and they don't want to advertise your shitty TV network. Either get on the dance floor or get the fuck out of their faces.

I love them for making this video. Also, does anyone else think those crosses are done in CG?

Hey, I remember: Millencolin

As far as rock music goes, most of my favorite stuff comes from Sweden. And when I think about it, among the giant list of bands from the land of Swedes, Millencolin (Myspace) was the first.

Millencolin was one of my first tastes of fun loving punk rock music. Back in the day when Minidisc players were as cool and chic as the first week when iPhones came out (before everyone got one!). Millencolin hits all bases for your general punk rock anthems: friends, family, love, having fun, growing up and buying awesome mopeds. Unlike Piebald, I'm glad one of my old favorite bands are still kicking it.

Ladies and Gents: The Young Punx

Dancey electro house is an odd beast. For a genre meant to make you want to get up, get down and have fun, it has run itself into a bit of a problem. Once one too many producers figured out just how easy it was to copy those simple, yet infectious grooves, the genre became stale. Soon all the funky basslines, guitar riffs, vocal samples and synth chord progressions became commonplace and it became hard to give a shit about new house tracks.

While The Young Punx (Myspace) aren't reinventing the genre or revolutionizing it, they are bringing the cheeky fun of dance music back to the floor. They are keeping their kick drums heavy, their guitar riffs funky, making sure the bass is going to shake plenty of hips and pitch shifting their vocal samples up a few octaves. It also helps that The Young Punx get most of their tracks remixed by some great producers giving their tracks and even stronger boost in the fun department.

Even people who write in "magazines" love these guys. Look at some words they wrote:
